by William R. Struby

Created exclusively for the Oklahoma City Museum of Art Store for the exhibition entitled, Renewing the American Spirit: The Art of the Great Depression.

While creating this work, Oklahoma artist William Struby was inspired by the Great Depression era, specifically, Oklahoma City and it's architecture. All four buildings represented on the piece are found on Oklahoma City's National Register of Historic Places, and are still standing. The two figures in the foreground were cropped from a 1936 photography entitled: "People living in miserable poverty, Elm Grove [Community Camp, Oklahoma City]", taken by Dorothea Lange while employed by the Farm Security Administration. Struby also used Ennis Carter's book, Posters for the People: Art of the WPA, as source of color and further inspiration.

A custom black lacquer frame was designed to encase the three-dimensional multi-media piece.

  • Dimensions: 17 x 17" with frame.
  • Mixed media
  • Custom black lacquer gallery frame and glass.
  • Signed and dated by artist on backside of piece.
