The Seasons (series) was Alphonse Mucha’s first series of decorative panels and became one of his most popular. Its success led publisher Champenois to commission two further sets on the same theme, in 1897 and 1900; designs for two additional sets also survive.

Though the personification of the seasons was a long-standing artistic theme, Mucha gave it fresh character through nymph-like figures set against seasonal countryside. Spring embodies the cycle’s innocence, joining Summer’s sultriness, Autumn’s abundance, and Winter’s frost in a harmonious vision of nature.
