A prolific artist, writer, and teacher, Paul Klee (German, born in Switzerland, 1879-1940) was a distinctive force in 20th century art. He made playful, inventive works characterized by a highly individual style of abstracted forms and symbols.

Our intriguing bow tie pattern is based on Temple Gardens (gouache and traces of ink on paper, 1920) in The Met collection, which appears to recall the artist's impressions from his visit to Tunisia in 1914. Klee's watercolor has the brilliance of a stained-glass window on a sunny day.
